Who is Mr. Bear? Mr. Bear is the class mascot, a stuffed bear that will come home with your child for the weekend. Your child is encouraged to have Mr. Bear tagalong on the family’s weekend activities. On Sunday evening you and your child will make a journal entry in Mr. Bear’s diary describing one of Mr. Bear’s adventures with your family. Mr. Bear should be returned to school Monday morning so that he will have plenty of time to rest up before his next big adventure.
The Guessing Jar This activity is used for estimation and place value skills. Your child will need to find a number of small items that will fit in the jar. Then count the items with your child and send them to school in the jar with a bag. Remind your child not to tell anyone how many items are in the jar. The class will estimate the number of items in the jar, group them and count them in a variety of ways. The items will be sent back home in a Ziploc bag. The directions should be returned with the jar.
Its my child's birthday, how will we celebrate? We celebrate your child's birthday for an entire week. Your child will be "Student of the Week" around the date of their birthday. We will celebrate the child's individuality as we learn more about them through sharing photos and answering questions about their interests. Your child will feel very special serving their special snack with their classmates. During this week we ask that you send in 4-5 photos of your child and a snack, on any day during the week, to share with the entire class. Please keep in mind that there are students with food allergies so I recommend phoning the student's parents to give them the opportunity to substitute the snack if necessary.
What is Letter Share? Word endings are assigned each week throughout the year. Once a week you child should search the house for an item that ends with one of the endings. (i.e. word ending "ig" your child may find a plastic pig) The item should then be placed in a brown paper lunch sack. Finally a clue should be written on the sack for your child to say to class so that their classmates could guess the word. (i.e. The clue may be " an animal on a farm".)
