First Grade News

What happened to April!! Sorry I didn't update my
newsletter in April the month just flew by and here it is May. Well we had a
very productive month in April and I will summarize it for you. We kicked
off this month with Cinco de Mayo, dancing to Spanish music, making a
sombrero, hitting the piņata, and shaking the maracas. This week we are preparing for
our annual Mother's Day Tea.
April Highlights:
- Science topics included the five senses and insects and frogs, life
cycles, the pond habitat and the difference between insects and spiders.
- Spelling words focused on the long o and i vowel sounds and oo.
- Literature included several versions of the folktale "There was an Old
Lady who swallowed a Fly", students created their own version and we retold
the story to Pre-K4.
- We created Spring poetry, wrote kite stories, and read "New Frog at the
Pond" for reader's theater.
- We learned about the parts of a sentence, subject and predicate.
- We finished up our math unit facts up to 20.
- We finished up our five-week Junior Achievement program.
- In religion we discussed the Pope's visit and his message of forgiveness.
We learned about honesty and saying we are sorry and being a peacemaker.
May Highlights:
- Literature will include many Mother's Day stories and books about home and
family. We will also begin our Nursery Rhyme unit which will culminate with a
puppet performance in early June.
- Our math units are measurement and time.
- We will have a three-week Reading Marathon. At the end of two weeks are
total count is 310 books read!
- Science will have us exploring habitats, the ocean and rain forest.
- We will record our poetry reading on a CDs.
- We will continue to learn about parts of a sentence and practice this in
our journals.
- We will create animal reports using the computer to find a picture and two
facts about the animal.
- We will write Mother's Day poetry and publish the poems using the
computer.
- In religion we will discuss Pentecost, Moses, and Mary.
